In January 2024, the House of Representatives recently passed a new bipartisan tax bill that includes welcome news for entrepreneurs looking to start new tech ventures. The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 aims to provide tax cuts and credits for individuals and businesses totaling $79 billion over 10 years.
Importantly for tech founders, the bill restores the ability for companies to immediately deduct research and development (R&D) costs rather than having to amortize them over multiple years. Here are some key details:
The ability to immediately deduct substantial R&D costs in the early years of operation provides a tremendous tax advantage. Rather than having expenses stretched out over 5+ years, startups can realize much larger losses and tax savings upfront.
This improves cash flow in those critical early years when funding needs to be maximized. It also enhances the value of startups to potential acquirers that can inherit the tax assets.
The Tax Relief Act passed the House 357-70 and now goes to the Senate for consideration. If approved there, it will head to President Biden for final signature.
Given the strong bipartisan support, analysts expect smooth passage in short order. But of course nothing is final until voted into law.
